Secure the mortgage

Secure the insurance coverage

Arrange the removal company  - or self-drive transportation

Rationalise your possessions  - this is a good opportunity to have a good clear out.  If you are doing the packing yourself, it's never too early to start - there is always more then you think.

Don't forget the attic and garage/shed items

Make sure any outside items are kept dry, so that they are dry for moving day.

Allow extra room for last minute items like bed linen, dirty clothes, toiletries

Clearly mark boxes with contents and destination room

Dismantle self-build furniture if it can't be moved whole

Don't forget to take down curtains and any wall fixtures

Secure parts of machinery which could be damaged during transit e.g. washing machine drums

Keep essentials (eg toiletries, bed linen, kettle, microwave) separate and readily available for access at the other end.

Know where the location of the local take-away - in case the cooker is not connected in time for move-in night!

House Keys. Check when the keys to your new home are going to be available, and that you know what to do with your own keys. Spare keys clearly label and leave on the kitchen worktop when you leave on moving day.

Parking  Ensure a parking space is available for the removal van at both ends of the journey

Fridge/Freezers Empty, defrost and dry out your fridge/freezer.

Kitchen cupboards. Clear out  kitchen cupboards and throw out anything that is out of date.  If the contents are being moved, check everything is sealed tightly to avoid spillage.

Valuables/documents - pack valuables and documents - place in a safe place and remember where you put them.

Pets - pets may not enjoy the general mayhem caused, so perhaps kennelling would be a good idea
